What percentage of Real Food do you and your family eat daily?

How do you plan in order to not succumb to a fast food frenzy at breakfast, lunch and dinner time?

McDonalds is the largest consumer of beef in the US which means, basically, they control the market...what type of beef is produced, how much it costs (how cheaply it is produced), what it tastes like etc. After watching Food Inc. I have a completely different view of our "Food System" in the US.

I believe that the tide is turning as people wake up. For example, Farmers Markets are very popular during the Summer and Winter months here in Colorado. Many people are choosing to buy locally grown organic foods rather than produce shipped from Thailand, China & Mexico. Along with Farmers Markets, smaller Mom & Pop stores are making a comeback as well. Many that are choosing to sell grass fed beef, cage free eggs, wild caught fish etc. stay very busy and have a strong following of loyal customers. Has anyone really ever been loyal to Wal-mart?

Many ranchers and small farmers sell their wares on line as well. With the option to pick up yourself you save on shipping and know that you are helping your neighbor, your health and your community.

Is anyone else seeing similar things?
Smoothie and protein bar on the go, $9.50 a number 2 meal at Mcdonalds $4.99... It will never change.. But if you add up the health care costs, co-payments, high blood pressure meds, the $9.50 down the road is a much better bargain. unfortunately most people do not look that far in advance. http://www.briody-fitnessnhealth.com/fitness-benefits.html
Great point!
it's cheap because it's cheap to make and it tastes great. You make a salad for 99 cents, people are still gonna pick the big mac. i don't think these restaurants are about making us fatter or deliberately giving us fatty food options. they've tried to accommodate the healthy-minded, but they just simply don't sell well. I'm sure if they were able to make some kind of food that tastes like fried chicken, with same costs, yet good for you and people buy it like crazy, every restaurant will sell it.
The stuff that's cheaper is subsidized. Fresh fruits and vegetables are not. The whole idea is crazy and the biggest cause of ill-health and disease. To get us back on track, we as a culture really need to promote the small farmer not the big business. We vote at the grocery store checkout.
Chemical ingredients are cheaper and have a longer shelf life than real food.

It's pretty sad. I went on a road trip to visit a friend in Ohio a few weekends ago. It was so hard to find anything remotely healthy. When I asked for vegetables they looked at me like I had a two heads.
I agree Jennifer. And if you can fresh fresh veggies or fruit they are likely not much better than the chemical food after sprayting, hauling and storing.

I totally agree with you Sherree. I vote Farmers Markets!
Did anyone see Food, Inc.
My wife and I watched food inc..it is amazing at what people will eat!! We started a garden this year and we are loving it already!! We support our local farmers market!! We are always asking where the produce came from etc..reason being is that much of what we eat is not vine ripened when it is picked, therefore it is not a nutritious as it would normally be. Looks like a great place to talk about eating healthy! I look forward to being a part of this group, thanks!
I would love to have a garden, but lack the space. So I am trying things in pots this year. Food, Inc. opened my eyes. I knew this information in the back of my mind, but seeing is a different story.
Gail, our garden is in pots and a planter I built on the deck..so keep moving forward with what you are doing!!
We too have started a container garden that will be on our deck. I am awaiting 6 more big pots as I am growing out of what we have :-D. They wont be able to go outside full time until mid May...so in the meantime our dining room is the garden.
