All About Us...

My name is Kim Peterson. I started CommonSenseHealth.Org in November of 2009 as a labor of love. My interest in Natural Health and Wellbeing is the results a life long journey.

My preference for complimentary and naturopathic medicine began to take shape in my early 20’s. After a gynecological exam, as a result of experiencing severe pain in my lower left abdomen, it was determined that I had a cyst…or maybe a tumor…they weren’t sure but they told me that it was mandatory that I have major surgery to have it removed immediately. Frightened and overwhelmed by the news, I agreed. Within 48 hours I had the surgery (to remove what turned out to be a water filled cyst) and went home to recuperate. A few short weeks later I had an even larger (so much so that it was visible through my skin) cyst on my left ovary, when I returned to the doctor, this time I was told that surgery wasn’t required as it is probably another water filled cyst and those are common and not dangerous. Really?  I was now even more even more confused to say the least.

Fast forward many years later. After my second child, our son Blake, had recurring and horrible ear infections he was put on round after round after round of powerful antibiotics. They caused horrible diarrhea and never fixed the problem. If that weren’t enough, it was suggested that he undergo surgery to insert tubes in to his eardrum to relieve the pressure, dry out the ear and get rid of the infections once and for all. After all the drugs and the procedure, the infections continued (as well as the antibiotics) and became so severe that the tube in his ear was blown out and he was left with a hole in his eardrum.

At this point, I felt increasingly powerless to make informed choices in my own health and that of my family.  I knew I needed more knowledge in order to properly and completely care for myself and those I love. I got my hands on everything I could read on naturopathic and homeopathic treatments. This was in 1997. I tend to be a little (or maybe a lot) militant when it comes to learning about something that I have a passion for. And all you Mothers out there can relate to how you will do ANYTHING to find a solution when your child is suffering.

Keep in mind this was before the Internet was accessible to the general public. Instead, I read books, lots of them, attended seminars, talked to naturopathic, homeopathic and energetic practitioners. I even started to study to become a Naturopath (Naturopathic philosophy favors a holistic approach, and seeks to find the least invasive measures necessary for symptom improvement or resolution, thus encouraging minimal use of surgery and unnecessary drugs) before an opportunity presented itself to start a medical device company…but I’ll get to that in a minute. To this day I still read, research and study natural healing methods voraciously.  My motivation to keep growing what I know is simple: I believe it is necessary to have the knowledge to care for our families and lead a life of proactive rather than reactive health care.

Wow! People Really, Really Want Help!

Fast forward to 1998, my husband Doug & I were presented with an opportunity to start a company* that sold a device, which was used, in the equestrian community to relieve pain and accelerate healing. This device worked so well that it wasn’t long before people started using it on themselves as well! The device made use of light or more precisely specific wavelengths of light to stimulate mitochondria in the cells, which stimulated circulation, reduced swelling, relieved pain and accelerated healing. In order to move into the human aspect of things we had to apply for and receive FDA approval, which we did.

At that point things went a little nuts, as there really is no traditional, effective solution for chronic, or long term pain sufferers. The results were fantastic; we were helping tens of thousands of people all around the world. Our company was featured in Western Horseman Magazine, Fast Company Magazine, The Denver Post, the Colorado Springs Gazette, Newsweek Magazine, The New York Times, and on the CNN Health Report among others. I was hooked.  Helping people solve their challenges and lead better lives was addicting. That’s why I am here now to share what I know with you on this wonderful Virtual Community.

I know from first hand experience that there are many tools and resources available to us, that we may not be aware of, which can enable us to live the life that we truly desire to live; a life of Health, Wellness and Success!
