There is so much information out there and the media puts out a lot of it.  We've got Dr. Oz, Dr. Drew, MSNBC and CNN health and don't forget the infomercials, commercials, and specials on health issues and products.

There are things you need to take into consideration when reading or watching the information provided by the media.

First, remember when it comes to TV, there is a time limit on covering topics.  It is very easy to take the information out of context and you really are only given tidbits of facts about a topic.  It's up to you to do more research.

Second, much information is generalized and you have to remember that you are an individual.  You really have to dig deeper to see if information pertains to you.  Especially when it comes to treatments.  Again, research and dig for more information.  Look at studies, talk to other professionals or your physician.

Third, looking at written media (newspapers articles, newsletters, etc), generally writers only have so many words they can use for an article.  Hopefully you are getting the meat of a topic but again, keep it in perspective and understand that more reading may need to be done.

Last but not least, make sure your viewing and readings are coming from a reputable source.  Even reputable sources have published incorrect information and with the internet, you definitely have to be careful.  Social media can be a haven for bad information as well as good so always beware.  Look at studies, get source recommendations from others, friends as well as professionals.

In summary, recognize time constraints and don't take out of context; information is often generalized, remember your individuality; use reputable sources, keep it in perspective and get recommendations from others.

I agree with Kim, sometimes information put out there is for commercial reasons rather than helping people to improve their health.  I like the way you have brought up both sides of the coin in this post.  I try to research things fully before trying them as there are often conflicting reports, it is safer to be careful than diving in head first.

Points well made Dee. I would also add "follow the money." Who backed the study & why? Is the owner of the station you are watching also a partner with the drug company that just launched an amazing new miracle drug? Word are powerful things as is visual media I believe it's our responsibility to seek truth rather than just accept what we are being told. Great post Dee, thanks!
