Medicine in a Jar - a review of Honey from the Journal of Medicinal Food

Honey is known to be a delicious sweetener to add to beverages or on toast. Certainly everyone's heard that you should take honey for a cold. But why? Here's a peer-reviewed article on the latest findings for the medicinal use of honey. Note the numerous symptoms a good jar of honey can have on maladies both internal and external. (Psst, it's also a good antioxidant!)

Honey and Microbial Infections: A Review Supporting the Use of Honey for Microbial Control
Noori S. Al-Waili, Khelod Salom, Glenn Butler and Ahmad A. Al Ghamdi. Journal of Medicinal Food, 22 Aug 2011

Honey has been used as a medicine throughout the ages and has recently been reintroduced to modern medical practice. Much of the research to date has addressed honey's antibacterial properties and its effects on wound healing.

Laboratory studies and clinical trials have shown that honey is an effective broad-spectrum antibacterial agent

Honey antimicrobial action explains the external and internal uses of honey. Honey has been used to treat adult and neonatal postoperative infection, burns, necrotizing fasciitis, infected and nonhealing wounds and ulcers, boils, pilonidal sinus, venous ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers. These effects are ascribed to honey's antibacterial action, which is due to acidity, hydrogen peroxide content, osmotic effect, nutritional and antioxidants content, stimulation of immunity, and to unidentified compounds.

When ingested, honey also promotes healing and shows antibacterial action by decreasing prostaglandin levels, elevating nitric oxide levels, and exerting prebiotic effects. These factors play a major role in controlling inflammation and promoting microbial control and healing processes. This article reviews data supporting the effectiveness of natural honey in eradicating human pathogens and discusses the mechanism of actions.

This is so true.  If you consider how frequently our ancestors took honey as a remedy and how often it features in ancient literature in this capacity you can understand how we have lost that natural ability to recognise those cures that come straight from mother nature.  Sadly the bee population is in decline, we should all work a little harder at helping these lovely little creatures to survive - for all our sakes.

Kim, what an understatement! Keeping things simple helps eliminate unnecessary complexities.

Another important and simple tip with that jar of honey.Next time you burn yourself in the kitchen, put honey on it. Don't bother with the aloe vera, ice cubes, cream, etc. Go straight to the jar, apply generously and cover with gauze (optional). You'll be amazed at how quickly the burning sensation disappears. In 10 min the pain will have gone and the associated redness/irritation quickly there after. Remember to do this the next time it happens. I assure you it works!

I can't say it enough - keep honey handy - it does wonders. In a pinch, I've always got my honey straws in the backpack, glove box or in my wife's purse.

For cuts or abrasions, honey kills germs and heals wound, keeping it moist to minimize scarring. All this can be done with a some honey, a bit a gauze and tape to keep it fresh on the wound.
