Health & Wellness can be so complicated can’t it? We are bombarded with studies and advertisements and a plethora of new products offering “the answer.” Well, it really doesn’t need to be that hard. A little Common Sense can go a long way towards big results. Here are four simple, inexpensive and doable actions that when practiced daily will give you far greater results than you ever imagined. The results start right away and you position yourself for a life time of Wellness, Energy and Vibrancy, all without costing an arm and a leg or requiring three PhD’s to figure out ;)
1) Good Nutrition: This is SO important. You are what you eat (so don’t be fast, cheap, easy or fake)...remember that. Make a conscious effort to gradually improve your eating habits, don’t think in terms of depravation but rather addition. Eat more of the good foods (unprocessed nuts, berries, olive oil, greens, lean meats (grass fed, cage free, minimally processed), whole grains, etc.) and less of the bad foods (fried, fast foods, snack foods sold in boxes or bags that offer lots of chemicals, very little nutrition and lots of calories, saturated fat, fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, etc.). Learn to read labels and discern between real quality ingredients and marketing ploys (“all natural”, & “natural ingredients” pretty much mean nothing…if it has a long shelf life it’s probably not very good for you.)
Once you start eliminating processed foods your desire to pig out on them will decrease as well. You wont be struggling, relying solely on willpower, your tastes will change and you’ll actually start craving real food rather than “food like substances.”
2) Exercise: Exercise is a huge piece of the puzzle when it comes to better health, wellness, mental clarity and focus, posture…I could go on and on. It doesn’t have to be complicated or grueling. You don’t have to dread it. Just find something that works for you, which you can incorporate into your daily life. Kind of like brushing your teeth, you wouldn’t start your day without doing it. Walking, hiking, swimming, taking classes at a gym, DVD’s at home, videos on YouTube, whatever works for you…the possibilities are endless, inexpensive and can be adapted to any age or lifestyle. Stop making excuses and start moving.
3) Nutritional Supplements: Isn’t this arena completely confusing? If we believed everything we were told we’d be inhaling buckets of pills & shakes every day.
While I very rarely recommend any form of supplement as what you need is so dependent on your general health, age and objectives, I can say it’s been my experience that EFA’s are a great tool for everything from mood to heart health to healthy skin & hair. Buying the best quality (least processed harvested by a company that is passionate about producing an extremely high quality product) and a combo product (offering flax, fish & borage oils…no mercury) can be a great supplement to a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle.
4) Stress Management and Sleep: This is a biggie! Stress management and getting good sleep each night are critical to your overall Health and Wellbeing. Until you find a way to manage your stress, it will continue to do damage to your body. Deep breathing, meditation, exercise, proper planning of your daily tasks and not getting sucked up in the drama (incessant TV viewing, news addiction, internet addiction) continually swirling around us will help immeasurably as you mindfully choose to manage your stress.
Getting enough sleep each night is equally important when you consider your body uses this time to repair itself. Having a wind down ritual is a great way to tune out the outside world and prepare your body for a restful night sleep. A warm bath laced with essential oils (lavender or ylang-ylang are great choices for relaxation), listening to peaceful music or nature sounds, giving thanks for the day you just experiences and for the wonderful day ahead can be a very effective tranquilizer.
These four simple, inexpensive and doable (for all ages) actions can make all the difference in your quality of life. Aren’t you and your family worth it?
